Dust

Ive been travelling for a few weeks straight now. Just arrived in berlin, germany (to catch Depeche Mode AND Midnight Oil!!!) and finally had time to reflect and write a bit. This latest travel medley took me to lisbon, (portugal), marrakech (morocco), and istanbul, (turkey). In every stop, I found myself swimming in tales of greatness of explorers and empires and religions – of triumphs and defeats.

I find a certain kind of peace when humbled to my knees to feel so insignificant in the face of great stories in history. i realize, when we can see ourselves being smaller than dust, then we can also see all our worries disappear. Pretty cool.

the value gap problem in the digital age

this is the age where creative outputs are accessible, more than ever, for everyone’s enjoyment: enriching culture, diversity, and lives all over the world. sadly this is also the age where creators are barely getting anything in return for their hard work.

in seoul for APMCA CISAC CIAM meetingslooking back on a week of intense meetings in seoul with creators and collective management orgs from all over the world and i am somehow pleased with the strides taken in the campaign for fairer practices in the digital era. but so much more has to be done.

this is the age where creative outputs are accessible, more than ever, for everyone’s enjoyment: enriching culture, diversity, and lives all over the world. sadly this is also the age where creators are barely getting anything in return for their hard work.

large global corporations are raking in billions from internet distribution of creative content they are unwilling to fairly value, grossly shortchanging those who create the very content they earn from. we call this the “value gap problem.” they hide behind intellectual property laws (lookup: safe harbor) that are antiquated and cannot keep up with the digital revolution. taking advantage of powerless songwriters worldwide.

there is a need for better dialogue with these corporations – our partners in bringing music into peoples lives. there is a need for assistance from enlightened lawmakers everywhere – our partners in preserving art, culture, and diversity.

when the creators are exploited – creation is stifled, production of new art, new content, is stifled. economies, cultures, quality of human life is stifled.

the road ahead is not easy. and if you love and value music, we will be needing your support.

hello

if you’re wondering why im starting a blog, that makes two of us.

im not very comfortable writing in essay form. in fact im quite daunted by it. while i dont recall this being the case when i was a student, i have a feeling years of practicing lyric writing for songs, where a certain kind of concision and rhythm is often required, had eroded my capacity for writing prose. or at least my confidence in it.

but here i am, and i blame mostly old friends and new people i’ve met on my recent trips who have brought up far too many times, the idea of sharing my experiences, photos, random insights in a blog. you see, ever since i decided to retire from the local entertainment industry at the start of the year, i’ve found more time to discover new places – in this planet, by way of travel, and in my mind, by way of reflection. my friends feel it would be a waste to keep everything to myself. im not fully convinced, but these days im all for escaping comfort zones, so im going to give it a shot and just see where this takes me.

there. i guess that was my first blog entry. it wasnt as painful as i expected.

this looks promising.

lol.
